Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), a dominant force in the electric vehicle (EV) battery market, has announced the initiation of a new production facility in Beijing. This development is a strategic response to the escalating demand for battery-powered vehicles within mainland China. The establishment of this plant is set to enhance Beijing’s goal to create a robust EV supply chain, which will benefit local enterprises such as Li Auto and Xiaomi as they venture into the creation of innovative EV models.

The company, with its headquarters located in Ningde, eastern Fujian province, has confirmed the commencement of the Beijing plant’s construction. Specifics regarding the facility’s production capacity and the date it will become operational remain undisclosed. The Beijing Commission of Development and Reform, the city’s economic planner, has similarly refrained from commenting on the project’s details. This expansion aligns with CATL’s significant market presence, where it holds a commanding 37.4 percent of the global market share and has produced 233.4 gigawatt-hours of batteries in the first 11 months of 2023.

Local manufacturers like Li Auto, a key player in China’s premium EV market, and Xiaomi, a promising entrant in the sector, are set to gain from CATL’s manufacturing presence. Li Auto has achieved notable success, delivering 376,030 intelligent vehicles to mainland customers in 2023, which is a 182.2 percent increase from the previous year. Xiaomi, meanwhile, has unveiled its first EV model, the SU7, and is preparing for trial production. Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s CEO, has articulated the company’s aspiration to be among the top five global carmakers within the next two decades.

China’s EV market has experienced significant growth, with the penetration rate surpassing 40 percent by the end of 2023. This increase is driven by consumer preference for environmentally friendly vehicles that offer cutting-edge features such as autonomous driving and digital interfaces. As the world’s largest automotive and EV market, mainland China represents around 60 percent of global battery-powered car sales. The competition is intense, and according to UBS analyst Paul Gong, only a handful of the more than 200 Chinese EV manufacturers are expected to endure until 2030. Fitch Ratings has projected a slowdown in the sales growth of battery-powered vehicles on the mainland to 20 percent this year, down from the 37 percent growth in 2023.

In a move that underscores its commitment to the EV industry, CATL is also on the cusp of releasing the world’s fastest-charging electric-car battery before the end of the first quarter of the year. This innovation is anticipated to elevate the company’s product portfolio and bolster the burgeoning EV market.
