NuScale Power Corporation (NYSE:SMR), a pioneer in advanced small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear technology, has inaugurated its latest Energy Exploration (E2) Center at South Carolina State University. This marks the 10th such facility globally, designed to prepare the next generation of nuclear energy professionals.
At the core of the E2 Center’s educational approach is a 12-module control room simulator, which offers students and participants a hands-on opportunity to experience and manage nuclear power plant operations. This initiative not only enhances learning but also supports community education about nuclear power’s benefits through demonstrations and tours for local leaders, K-12 students and the public.
John Hopkins, President and CEO of NuScale, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with South Carolina State University, emphasizing the growing demand for clean, reliable power and the corresponding need for skilled professionals. “We are excited to partner with SC State on our 10th E2 Center, helping to build a strong workforce of nuclear energy innovators,” said John Hopkins, NuScale President and Chief Executive Officer. “As clean, reliable power demand grows, so does the need for skilled professionals. This facility will offer students practical experience, problem-solving skills, and the expertise to advance clean energy solutions.”
The E2 Center is expected to play a transformative role for South Carolina State University. According to Alexander Conyers, President of SC State, the center not only brings world-class tools to the campus but also significantly contributes to the university’s research mission and strengthens its role in workforce development.
The global network of NuScale E2 Centers spans across North America, Europe, Africa and Asia, with locations at prominent universities such as Idaho State University, Ohio State University and Seoul National University. These centers are part of NuScale’s broader mission to drive the global energy transition through safe, scalable and reliable carbon-free energy solutions.
NuScale Power Corporation was founded in 2007 and has since been at the forefront of SMR technology development. The company’s innovative NuScale Power Module™ can generate 77 megawatts of electricity or 250 megawatts thermal (gross) per module, with configurations scalable up to 924 MWe (12 modules). The first company to have its SMR design certified by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. This strategic expansion of educational facilities underscores NuScale’s commitment to fostering innovation and expertise in the nuclear energy sector, ensuring a well-prepared workforce to meet future energy challenges.
